My name is Daniel King I am the Open Source Web Specialist Consultant, I specialise in PHP, Drupal and Front-end web development. I wanted to write a brief piece explaining what Drupal is and where I see it in the market place at the moment.
Drupal is an open source CMF which uses a PHP code base. It works by using a Drupal Core and a series of add-on extra modules which give your site extra functionality based additional wants and needs.
It is a philosophy by which a product and its source code are freely available to whoever would like to use it. These open source programs are written and developed by a community of developers who, in general, give their time and expertise for the benefit of all. Drupal is an Open Source software, it is free to use, download and adapt.
The way Drupal works is by presenting you with a Drupal Core from which you can set up a basic site and then presents you with a very long list of modules from which you can choose from and add to your site to increase its functionality. This Core is basically a group of files (modules and themes) with which you can start constructing your site.
Then we move on to Drupal Theming which is essentially the sites look and feel or in basic term’s the hair and make up. Many organisations choose Drupal as their Web Development technology of choice because it is highly scalable and robust, also it is free.
