Can anyone remember what the weather was like on October 5 last year?

You probably don’t but I do! Because last year it started raining at about 7pm and it didn’t stop until about 6am the following day. And the reason that I can remember it so vividly is because I was trying to sleep in a sleeping bag all night. I have NEVER been so cold!!

Yes, it was Byte Night 2012, and what a horrible night that was -  I and my team were absolutely soaked! But I was lucky, because at 5am I gave up trying to sleep, rolled up my sleeping bag and trotted off home, where I had a shower before falling into bed and into a very deep sleep for 6 hours.

I say I’m lucky because there are thousands of young people in this country who have to go through that EVERY night.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the event, Byte Night is an annual event which sees over 1,200 people sleep out under the stars – to raise money for leading children's charity Action for Children. http://www.bytenight.org.uk/

Since 1998 this event has raised over £5.2 million and we are hoping to raise over £1m from this year's event alone – last year we raised £960k. The money raised helps support young homeless people, particularly those that are forced to leave the local authority care system at 16 and end up with nowhere to go. They end up on the streets; they get exploited; they turn to drugs for a 'release'; they turn to prostitution to pay for the drugs. It's a downward spiral.

I know this because I have spoken to them. They are children. They often run away from abusive homes. They do not want to be homeless. And Action for Children gathers them up, cares for them, helps them, and gives them the support they need to get their lives back on track. That's why we do Byte Night.

Vertex Solutions will be entering a team again this year and yes, I am back for more punishment!
